Changes Coming to Bulk Item Collection

The Borough has signed a waste and recyclable collection contract that will keep the current hauler, BFI-Allied Waste, working in Trappe until at least June 2013. The new deal continues the same quality weekly service Borough residents now enjoy at no additional cost to homeowners. And, the long-term contract will save taxpayers more than $40,000 in 2010 alone. BFI-Allied Waste will continue to offer single-stream recycling and will likewise provide for the annual collection of holiday trees.
The sole change in service comes with the collection of bulk items. Beginning this month, bulk items will be collected on the last collection day of each month rather than just once a quarter. Residents will be permitted to dispose of only one bulk item per month, however. Residents who wish to dispose of more than one bulk item per month may contract for this service with BFI-Allied Waste. There is a $35 fee per additional bulk item collected; this fee is $60 for each bulk item that possesses Freon.

Council Approves Balanced 5-Year Budget

Borough Council has approved a five-year balanced budget that includes no new or increased taxes. Trappe Borough remains one of only two Montgomery County municipalities without a local property tax. "Borough Council has worked very hard to hold the line on expenses," says Finance Chairman Nevin Scholl. "And when many communities are enacting double-digit tax hikes, Trappe has delivered quality services without an increase in cost to the taxpayer."
The budget includes additional dollars for curb and sidewalk repair, funds a redevelopment study of West Main Street in 2010, and provides more than $260,000 to support the Trappe Volunteer Fire Company during the upcoming five years.
This is the Borough's first five-year budget. The longer-term approach helps the Borough to better plan for tomorrow's challenges today. A copy of the budget can be found here.
Patrick Joins Council
Mayor Connie Peck joined Borough Council in welcoming Ted Patrick to Council. Patrick, elected to a four-year term in November, was administered the oath of office by District Justice Cathleen Kelly Rebar at the annual Borough Reorganization Meeting on January 4. "Trappe is a wonderful community," says Patrick. "I look forward to working to keep Trappe a great place to live and raise a family." Incumbent Members Catherine Johnson, Nevin Scholl and Matt Watson were re-elected to Borough Council in the General Election.
Mayor Peck, who was likewise re-elected in November, thanked outgoing Member Steve Kurcik for his hard efforts throughout his four-year tenure on Borough Council. "Steve cares about Trappe, and he always worked for the best interests of our residents," says Peck. "I and Council are very thankful for his many contributions to our community."
